Amber Armstrong Desk Scene

Inspiration

The inspiration for my desk scene came from a photo I found of an actual office space.  After modeling the basic structure from that photo, I then added my own touches to the scene.  The room is a snug little office space. This space was designed with a modern but classic, look and feel.  From the sleek mahogany office furniture, to the hanging wall pieces, this room is an ideal startup workspace for a future designer; like myself.  The L shaped desk has a mahogany wood top with iron base legs attached, as does the table in the room.  I sub-patched the desktop to give it some curves and smooth out the corners.  The shelving also has a mahogany wood base with painted black drawers and wood handles, and an upper cut out to place items in for show.  The overhead light fixture is centered in the room, and gives a higher circular light to the room, while still maintaining a subtle light around the objects near the floor.  The windowsill has an iron texture on it, which gives it a permanently shut sort of feel, which is why I placed the shelving in front of it.  The floor rug was a rectangle that I sub-patched and gave a blue/grass texture, which sits in front of the desk to match the room.  The glass Champaign cooler, which is holding a Champaign bottle, has a ripple design that resembles a wine glass.  I conjured up a wine glass with a blue tent.  I created the hanging art, which brush texture, and placed 3d squares on the brushed canvas.  I also made a sculpture and set it on the cut out of the shelving.  One of my favorite parts of the room is the structure.  I like how the walls and hanging ceiling look together.  The colors I chose for the room are golden and cream tones.  Also to get away from the regular boxed look in the room, I added a brick pillar near the back of the room to give the space a different dimension.  I also included blue iron supports around the pillar.

Problems and Solutions

The only problem I ran into was with the lighting.  The lighting took some time to place and get the effect that I was looking for.  Overall I think that the lighting came out pretty good.  The lighting came out around the top of the room in a ripped circular pattern which was retracted on the wall and made a shadow.  There was just enough light near the bottom of the room to light the objects below.  So, by turning on refraction in Lightwave I was able to get the effect that is seen in the room.
