Inspiration

We set out to make an image that invoke at the same time a sense of serenity, and still a potent message.  The collapsed cathedral, becoming overgrown, seems like a calm place.  But the sword, driven through the altar is a reminder of how the cathedral was destroyed, and of the inevitable path of humans, fighting for a cause or belief.  The idea is that after all the fighting is said done, however, that nature takes back over and the serenity settles in, is a comforting one.

Problems and Solutions

Josh

The biggest problem we faced, I believe, was that there were only two people in our group.  This severely limited the man-hours we had to put toward the project and left our final project very short of what I had originally envisioned it as.  One major problem I faced was getting light to stream through the window.  The sun sky tracer put in the scene just wasn't bright enough, but getting another light to mimic the effect, without being visible over the wall, was very hard and tedious to do.  I ultimately just used a spotlight and spent the necessary hours tweaking it into just the right spot.  Giving more time with this project I would add more rubble and tweak the textures some more.

Matt

My biggest obstacle was the stained glass window. I had my hand in many other objects, but decided to dedicate myself to the window. It turned out to take hours and hours of work just to split the window up into different sections, and to create the polygons in the correct shape of the cross. In the end, I ended up spending most of my time trying to make the stained glass window operational. The time constraints made it very difficult to finish the rest of the project. If I could change something about the project, it would be how I went about the stained glass window. I also had difficulties with saslite and skytracer2 during the render phase they seemed to loose their settings and the scene became much to dark. All in all it amounted for one gigantic headache, and the best cure would be more time to develop the scene and to work out the problems that we have encountered along the way. Only having 2 group members made it very difficult as well!
