Inspiration

We were inspired to do a fantasy-style scene with a very vast, open setting. We began looking at Star Wars pictures of the newer movies.  We then sought to search for inspiration in a culminations of ideas we each had acquired in our initial search. We used an image we found off the internet for a reference.

Problems and Solutions

Ben  The sea was relatively straightforward. I used a tutorial to create its surface. The waves were more difficult. It was hard to figure out how to go about creating them. I ended up just lathing to create an uprising. Overall, the hardest part of this scene I think was figuring out what to do. We kept throwing around ideas and changing them. Were almost all set on recreating a Star Wars scene, but scrapped that idea for a castle scene.

Keo  I had one problem with making this island.  The polygons does not behave the way I wanted it to or at least that I thought I wanted it to behave.  I wanted the polygons to come out like how I selected the points put it would come out triangles that point outwards.  This was the main problem I had.  I fought with solutions of to fix it but could not find a solution.  I just went with the triangles pointing out and modified them so they would look or fit to what the island would look like.

I expressed my doubt to my group member about this island would work to look the way I wanted it too.  Amber suggested I look up real ocean cliffs to get an idea of what to do to make it look realistic.  I did and found that the cliff island had layers in them.  They are rectangular shaped, like bricks.  So I took this into consideration to find a technique on how to make this type of island cliff.  I found that I would start with one layer that is about 5 feet high that is circular.  I used the disc tool and created the layer.  I then made a square that would be used to cut out the layer to create the texture of the island cliff.  I Boolean the outside edges of the layer.  I made a copy of that layer and sized and rotated it and moved it up so it would stack up on top of the 1st layer to get a natural look to it.  I repeated these two steps until I got my desired height and look of the island cliff I wanted.

Amber - I concentrated on the castle.  It was basically made up of simple shapes, such as rectangles, triangles, circles, and hexagons.  I made little cut outs in the some of the towers as windows openings.  I had some issues with making some of the cut-outs, and I use the knife tool to cut out strange edges.  I modeled the castle to be slighting non-symmetrical like the castle that I found.  I textured the castle, the castle wall, and the grass around the castle.  Texturing took me a while, to find the right color and texture.  I attempted to apply some bumping on the castle as well.  I colored the grass to look more realistic, by adding some other colors to show the imperfections.  I textured the roofs with a pre-set metal texture and changed the settings so it would catch light and object reflections.

Leon- The hardest part of skytracer was choosing which one too run with.  With skytracer it was hard to go wrong and get a bad result, each attempt created a new and sometimes more interesting result.  The dragon was for me a great experience in learning all the tools, no particular tool was utilized more than another.
