Dylan Smith Final Scene
 Lost and Forgotten
Inspiration

The sword has been stuck in the stone for centuries and has been lost and forgotten. It still holds magical powers because it is visited every day by farys witch bless the sword of the true king. One day the sword will be stumbled on again and maybe it will be pulled from the stone crowning the new king.

Problems and Solutions

This project gave me the most trouble out of all three of the projects. I had to start over three times and completely change my concept. First off I was going to try to make a Nissan 350Z from a Newtech tutorial. But then I was going to make a cool fish tank to put inside mounted in the rear of the car where the rear seat should be but. I soon realized that there was no way I was going to finish my car model let alone the fish tank in the time we were given to complete this project. I then moved on to trying to make a cool “Finding Nemo” style fish tank but once again I realized that I could not make gravel in time to create the other elements I needed for my fish tank. Time running short I decided to use a previous model I had made and work off of that. I had the basic sword in the stone model already made but it was not textured and there was no backdrop to the scene. I took my basic model and went straight to layout with it and began texturing and lighting but the scene was still rather boring and trapped the viewer. I then learned how to make terrain using weight maps and added sky tracer to open the scene up and let the viewer look around. I ran into several problems in doing this. First off Sas Lite would not do what I wanted so I learned to layer my Sas lite’s. I also had problems with Skytracer but they were a lot easier to figure out. I also had a lot of problems getting my terrain to a low enough polygon count so that Sas Lite would even work on it.

Technical

I learned a lot doing this project unfortunately they were not fun lessons to be learned. I learned that I must keep my expectations to a lower level because I would run out of time and end up with nothing. I began wanting to make the 350Z using my 2D to 3D method I gave my tutorial on. I placed the image in the backdrop and matched up the polygons. It took me about 30 hrs to get the front fender right so I moved on to trying to make a fish tank. I made the fish and the fish tank but I could not make good looking gravel no matter what method I used. I tried making several rocks and arraying them, I tried bump maps, I even tried reflection but that didn’t work ether. I then had to give up once again and move on. I used very basic modeling methods for my third model which is the one you see here but I went to layout early to try to get the overall scene the way I liked. I used particles for the fairy dust and a lens flare to make the fairy glow. I also UV mapped her face which was pretty simple. I used a weight map for the terrain and then applied Sas Lite to it. I originally had walls around the scene but it was a little boring so I added sky tracer. I threw it all together and bam, it looked great. I will say that if I had more time I could have done a lot better but I worked very hard to get this project done and I’m glad it’s over. Oh Yeh, my render time was ridiculous.
