For this project I sat back and thought about what I wanted to express, what I wanted to show as my final work for this class. I ran through a few ideas and came up with my island theme.  I have had a fascination with the sea, and the beach for a while now.  The feeling I get from looking at the ocean from a beach is a feeling of pure peacefulness.  Just looking at an image, portrait or painting brings this calm over me.  Like nothing else matters, that the only thing that matters is the moment you are in, that there are no worries and that everything is put into perspective.  I wanted to show an island in the middle of nowhere, where there is nothing in sight, no school, no work, no television, no money, nothing.  Just the ocean and me.  Originally I had an idea of showing a boat with a suit case and in the suit case I was going to show all these things that meant a lot to me.  But I decided that if I went to some deserted island in the middle of nowhere I would want to just be free, free from the chains that we put upon ourselves.  More than anything I would want a clear head, and looking at my island gives me that perspective, if but for a few seconds.

*Note: The night images, I’m afraid, might not show up too well on your computer, you might want to turn up your computers brightness for those if you really want to see them (sorry).

Problems and Solutions

Where do I start, I had lots of things I wanted to tackle with this assignment, which brought many problems. The textures were the biggest pain to me, for the water texture I used tutorials, but they never seemed to give me what I wanted.  I tried a few tutorials, and decided on one that was made by a student in this class, the other section.  I followed what he did, and then tweaked the settings a bit to fit what I wanted.  At first I wanted to ocean to look like it would from up close, but I couldn’t get those settings, so I sat back and thought about what I wanted.  I then realized that to show the whole scene I would need to show the island from far away to show the emptiness of the scene, so I left the settings of the ocean as is.

The sand texture was difficult, at first I tried all sorts of things, from images to procedural bmp’s, to bmp’s I created.  I finally upped the settings on a procedural texture and added more procedural textures then before to show a rough sand texture.   For the shape of the island I found a tutorial for the magnet tool by a former CSCI 140 student, which gave me a shape for my island. For sky tracer I used the settings from a tutorial to start with, I then realized I wanted more low altitude clouds and more thickness of the clouds so I tweaked these settings from the tutorial.  Playing with the sun, camera angles and the color of the sun/moon was fun to do.  I wanted to show my scene with different lights to set different moods to my scene.  By just adjusting the lighting you can easily alter the mood; I learned this from my group project.  Adding stars by putting a ball in the scene and turning up the luminosity gave that effect, which was cool as well

I am very proud of this work, I really feel like I got a good feel for this program.
