Patrick Nelson Final Scene
 Moonlit Ocean
Inspiration

My inspiration for this piece came from my final project in my CSCI 40 class.  The assignment was to create a allegorical self portrait.  I chose to create a scene that was very quiet and calm because that reflects my personality.  I love staring out into star filled skies or gazing upon a full moon.  The original piece was done in Aura using airbrushes.  I decided to redo this same scene in 3d using light wave for my final project.  I’ve added a few more trees to the scene and a little more detail.  I originally was going to try to place a person in the scene, like in the original, but I did not have time.

Problems and Solutions

The first problem I had with this project is making a moon that gave accurate light to the scene and looked like a glowing moon in the sky.  The solution I ended up using was an actual disk moon object in the sky with three different lights.  One light was placed behind the moon and had lens flare set to create the moon glow.  I then had a spot light placed in front of the moon shining back on the moon object to make it light up.  I then had a third light in front of the moon shining towards the rest of the scene that creates the glow on the water and the lighting for the scene.  The next problem I had was making the moon reflection show up on the water.  I tried out several different water tutorials until I found one that crated water that reflected the moonlight in a realistic way.  Finally, I had to play with the overall lighting of the scene to make it as though it was dark, yet still have enough light to make the scene visible on the screen.  I ended up using Photoshop in the end to lighten the final image because if I increased the lights in the scene it crated unrealistic glares on the trees.
