Kevin Kim Final Scene
 Nature
Inspiration

I wanted to make a scene that had to do with landscape and scenery because I did not get a chance to do so in the past projects.  I thought that the groups that did nature scenes did a good job, and I wanted to know how to make scenes like that.  And since this class is about learning to model and texture, I thought I might as well learn how to do nature type modeling while in the class.  I originally wanted to make a vast, open fields type scene.  However, I could not think of enough objects to put into the scene other than boring rocks and leafless trees, so I opted for a grassy and leafy tree populated scene.

Problems and Solutions

Initially, I knew I would not be able to accomplish everything I wanted to do for this scene.  The previous group scene left me wanting a grand scene, but in reality I could never accomplish such a scene on my own with less time available.  Because of this, I tried to keep the complexity of my final scene down.  I spent the first week learning (and finding) Sasquatch and TreeCage.  I worked out the grass and ground early and started working on the trees.

After I got a tree done, I decided to try to incorporate some animals.  I modeled a rabbit, but ran into problems with Sasquatch.  It could not recognize the rabbit for some reason and would not add the fur.  This took a lot of time out of my overall scene.  I spent a lot of time modeling the rabbit, but had to let it go since time was running out.  I overcame this problem by working on making some more trees in the little time I had left.  Since I only had trees and grass, I decided I needed to work on my sky.  So I took down the dome I was using with an image mapped on it and worked on Skytracer.  I was a little disappointed that I couldn’t get fur on my rabbit, but I feel that my overall scene was enhanced more by the use of Skytracer.

Another problem I faced was placing my trees in Lightwave.  I used Modeler to arrange my trees the way I wanted them because it was impossible to do so accurately on Lightwave since I had to keep my leaves and trunks separate.  Using various layers and open objects, I was able to place my trees and duplicate them too.

I faced some other minor problems with Sasquatch, TreeCage, and Skytracer.  These problems were remedied by guess and checking though.
