Esther Johnson Final Scene
 Lazy Day at the Beach 
Inspiration

After my first two projects, I wanted to create an outdoors scene. I think Skytracer is one of the coolest features that I have come across so far in Lightwave. I was so unsure about what to do that it took me weeks and weeks of worrying about it and trying new things before I came up with the idea. I knew that I definitely wanted to make this scene realistic looking so I could at least try to compete with the projects of the other students. I decided that since I had done my presentation on Sasquatch lighting that it would be a good idea to incorporate that into my project. Next to Skytracer, Sasquatch lighting is number two on my “coolest features in Lightwave” list.  As far as the inspiration goes for what to create, I decided to do a day at the beach. So I modeled a beach ball, a glass, sand, used skytracer and created grass with sasquatch lighting.

Objective
 
My main concern and the one thing that I really wanted to accomplish was to make the scene look realistic. I was also realistic in my expectations due to the fact that I know what my capabilities are… and I think “limited” would be an accurate word I could use to describe them. Knowing that and with the help of Dr. Steinbeck, I modeled a beach ball to give the scene that “beach” feel. My glass didn’t turn out as great as I expected, but I am happy with it. Another objective was to hopefully achieve “good lighting”. Skytracer made that possible… and I cannot take credit for that one. Therefore, lighting and realism are the two most important things for this project for me.

Problems and Solutions

I had a difficult time just coming up with the idea. That would probably be the first thing I ran into with this project. The second problem I had was scaling. I didn’t know how big to make the object to put the grass on. I tried several times, but things were just not working out… it was either too big so the blades of the grass swamped the camera… or too small and looked even weirder. Finally, and I don’t know how… I created four discs that were the perfect size and the grass came out great. Also, I was experimenting with sand. I ultimately ended up using a lightwave texture called “Dune” to lay over the middle object, but it really wasn’t all that important that it look great because you weren’t even going to see very much, especially through the grass.
 
What would I have done differently?
 
As far as what I would’ve done differently, I am actually really pleased with the final product. I know my capabilities in this class are extremely limited so I am impressed with the way the scene turned out. Obviously, if I had had more time… I would’ve added a canvas beach umbrella to the scene and perhaps some other objects.
