Matt Hayes Final Scene
 Dragon
Inspiration

I originally wanted to make a scene that involved a character of one of my childhood games. However, as I worked on the project I decided that I had lost interest in the modeling, and I wanted to do something different. Revamping my idea, I decided that I would make a type of New Year’s celebration, a year of the dragon type of deal. I got onto the project with much more motivation than before, and spent a good amount of time creating the dragon, the buildings and deciding where everything would be and how it would work.

However, I ran out of time to add the extra affects I wanted. I wanted to put shadowed/silhouetted figures along the streets and the sidewalk, and a type of confetti and paper in the air. I piece that brought out noise, celebration, and fun. Because I ran out of time, I had no choice but to not include the extra ideas for the original renderings. Instead, the scene unintentionally became something different, and more along the lines of a Godzilla type creature running down the streets. Despite that change, I still enjoy the scene, and still worked immensely hard on the city and the dragon. I hope to keep on working with it to improve it, and perhaps steer it more towards its original idea.

Problems and Solutions

The largest difficulties I came into was creating the dragon’s body so that it seemed realistic, and secondly making the scene feel like you were in the city. I had no idea how hard the visual space would be to manipulate to give the feeling of a crowded city with buildings, or how vastly different and unique each building has to be to give it a correct feel and atmosphere. It took a lot of manipulation to get the scene to feel even remotely right. Upon that, your camera angles are severely limited because of it. Go too high and you can see beyond your buildings, get to crowd and you can’t see enough.

I leaned upon the idea that the dragon was supposed to be a prop for a “parade” celebration type of idea. But when the rest of the parade was gone, I had to focus on creating the dragon as realistic as possible, even if it was just to resemble a prop. I am pleased with how the dragon came out- I think it’s well done for my first attempt. However it ate up many hours by itself trying many different positions, colors, and objects that would blend together to make the mind think “Dragon”. I’m not sure if that’s what it will register to other people, but that’s something I’m going to be receiving feedback on in the near future.

Other than that, lighting was fairly difficult too. I wanted a night scene; however I couldn’t get comfortable with any of the options I had. So I definitely have many areas to improve in!
