Francie Divine Final Scene
 The Expedition
Inspiration

I had no specific inspiration for this scene. I just knew that I wanted to make a scene that was very different from my others, and use new techniques that the student tutorials had taught us. The only real idea that I had for my scene was that I wanted to give it an expedition type of feel. I thought of movies like Indian Jones, Laura Croft, etc. My scene ended up being very sparse, but when I tried to add objects to it, they looked out of place, one of my biggest dilemmas. I then just tried to choose camera shots that balanced this problem out. I tried to focus on the important aspects of the scene which were the feeling of the long corridor, the torches, and the symbols on the walls.

Problems and Solutions

One of my biggest problems was getting the sand to look good. I wanted it to look like real sand, as if it had been swept around. I spent a long time trying to figure out how to do it, and had come to the conclusion that I was just going to have to model it point by point. The solution to this problem was the Subdivide tool. Inside this tool is a Fractal option, which I raised up to 20%, and it gave me the curves in the object that I wanted. My next problem was fire. I used the fire tutorial that was presented in the 6pm lab section. All the instructions were very good; however, to get the fire (and the glow around the fire) the way I wanted it to took long hours of messing with. When my scene was all done I had 13 volumetric lights. By turning the sprite mode ON for my fire (not my glow) in the volumetric settings, it cut my render time way down. Even though my scene is pretty skimpy on the number of objects, the bulk of my time was spent with lighting.
