Ben Borofka Final Scene
 Imminent Impact
Inspiration

My idea for this scene was to create something as realistic as possible, but also very interesting and exciting. I wanted to focus on detail and try to recreate something as realistic as possible. A flaming meteor heading for Earth just struck as something that would be fun to make and a challenge to look good.

Problems and Solutions

Creating the Earth, Moon and Asteroid was pretty tedious, but straightforward. The Earth was the most complicated. It uses 3 layers (surface, clouds, and atmosphere) with multiple textures and image maps. I modeled the moon after the photorealistic Earth tutorial, only needing a surface layer with an image map and bump texture. The most difficult part of this scene was the fire behind the meteor. I had a very tough time figuring out how HyperVoxels work, but after much trial and error, I was able to get a fire trail, albeit clumsily. The star background is just a simple FMB Procedural backdrop.
