Andrew Winner Desk Scene
 Designing My Desk
Inspiration

When I began the process of creating a desk scene in light wave I first had to decide what kind of desk I wanted. I started to sketch out a couple of my ideas. At the time there was a big media reaction to the new movie the passion of the Christ and the only image the media kept showing was the crucifixion of Christ. I sketched this image up and decided that this would not be a good design for a desk but it did give me an idea for another desk. I thought back through Greek history and remembered that image of atlas with the world on his shoulders, this idea stuck and became my plan for my scene.

Problems and Solutions

I now had to figure out how I was going to make a desk out of this scene. I knew that the earth was gong to have to be resized and that meant cutting the earth in half. After I knew what I wanted to make I hade to begin construction in modeler of the objects that I would need for the scene. I first went in to light wave and made space box holders and then went back to modeler and made the objects that fill in the box space holders.

I started to work on the body that held up the world on its shoulders and then the slab of earth that would act as the desk. I decided that the earth cut in half might make for a dirty desktop so I created a glass slab to go over the top of the earth. My next course of action was to design and model a lamp that sits on my desk at home. Based on the design of my lamp form Ikea, I recreated the lamp with different colors and a luminous light. I already made the pencil so that was just a matter of loading that object and resizing it to fit in to the scene. I wanted to make another object that would add to the scene so I designed and added a snake to my scene. The pint glass from the objects library was perfect for my needs so since I already had a glass slab on top of my desk I decided not to mess with perfection and borrow the pint glass from light wave objects.

The tricky part of the entire operation was that I had to find a way to make it look like Atlas was in space, giving him that floating look with out making him look like he was floating. It turns out that it was easier than it sounds. I found a great tutorial online and was able to make a dome that created the feeling that atlas was really in space among stars and planets.

The tutorials I used for this project were from

http://members.shaw.ca/lightwavetutorials/Main_Menu.htm
http://www.alpha-zone.com/tutorlightwave.htm

I found that if I had more lab time the possibilities would be endless on what I could do in a space scene. I had a lot of fun on this project, the toughest part of it was trying to come up with an idea that I wanted to do and then finding out how to make things the way I wanted. Glass seemed hard at first but now seems simple to make. This exercise has helped me gain a better understanding of how to lay out a scene and plan for what I want to do in that scene
