| | Inspiration
Whenever I see movies like , or Ghostbusters, or The Italian Job, or My Fair Lady, I always envy the magnificent libraries the characters have. Someday when I have my own house, I want to have a room something like the one I created, only with many more books. Somewhere I can go to relax and maybe get away from a computer every once in a while. Even though my own library or study is probably a long way off, I can still look ahead, assuming consequences are such that someday I will have funds for a room like this.

| | Textures
I used the Lightwave wood texture on my door, desk, chair, and bookshelves. I used Lightwave’s grass texture for the carpet. All of the books have a texture on them called “TurbulentNoise” although I lowered the intensity of the bump map quite a bit to try to get them to look more like an old clothy book cover. The flower petals have a texture called “Vines” but when I render my scene the texture doesn’t show up at all. The hinges and the door knob both have the brass texture, and the bases of my bookends have a copper texture. The base of the lamp has a low gloss metal texture. The books on the table also have pictures of three different books: The Golden Compass, The Subtle Knife, and The Amber Spyglass, all by Philip Pullman, off of Amazon.com. And lastly, vase has both an inside and outside glass texture.
Tutorials
I tried a couple of different tutorials for this project. The first one I did was a tutorial on making a wine glass on a table with a curtain behind it. The tutorial was created by Tony Gilchrist off of his website: http://www.puppydoodle.biz/contact.htm. I also used the only flower tutorial I could find, which was by Bee Thao off of http://www.ecst.csuchico.edu/~ranger.
Problems and Solutions
Problem 1: The first problem I had was saving information to my computer without making a backup.
Solution: Always make backups, never trust your computer on it’s own, spend extra time in the lab outside of class.
Problem 2: Going to the lab on a weekend and leaving the room for five minutes, only to discover that the rooms are locked from the outside on weekends. All my stuff was locked inside till Monday morning.
Solution: If you’re in the lab on a weekend, don’t leave the room, unless you take your stuff with you. I went back to school on the next day, Sunday, and had to get a policeman to unlock the lab so I could get my stuff out.
Problem 3: I had lots of trouble with the Bend Tool, all I wanted to do was bend the petal I had made for my flower up, so that it would really look like a petal. All I was able to get the petal to do was twist out of proportion.
Solution: Ask people who know about such things. I learned that to simply bend something to the side, you have to be operating in the top view.
Problem 4: Trying to paste pictures of books over polygons set into my bookshelves. I could never get it to look right, either the wood from the bookshelves where the real books are kept would get in the way, and not look right with my bookshelves; or, the wood of the real bookshelves, when I did get it in the right place, would be too bright for the shadows it was supposed to be in.
Solution: I made my own book objects. | |
