Ryan I had problems with finding a metal texture. After browsing, the tutorials, I saw that the rail clone tool seemed to emulate this, so I experimented with that and got good results. Aside from that, my main problem was similar to Ryan's - I had trouble getting a good metallic texture that worked. I ended up starting with some of the Lightwave preset metal textures and modifying their specularity and reflectivity until I had texture that I liked the look of.
Sean When I was making the Tomcat I had the biggest problem with where to start. I started the jet about three times because I just couldn't get the right shape or I painted myself into a corner. I finally decided to go and buy little models of the jet and start making the pieces one at a time instead of trying to make the whole thing out of one object. This really made the project a lot easier. After messing around with the jet so many times I learned how to use the SubPatch tool really well and was able to make the dolphins and the seagulls without a problem.
Ben - The first problem I had was with the bump mapping for the water. To create the bump map for the water you need to create a null object and crumble object which gives the attributes to the xyz of the waves. The problem I had was the scaling of the xyz ocean waves. They wouldn't fit the same dimensions as the ships and jets. Trial and error was the only solution to this problem. Lighting was also a problem. It was hard to recreate realistic lighting. You must take in consideration that there is only one light source. But also the sky from all angles is illuminating the objects so there must be a distant light. When light hits the water it took away from the sunset reflection effect that we were going for. So we set the water so that it wouldn't reflect the distant light source.
