Story: The travel journey of a cricket (by To Hoai)
The inspiration for our scene comes from a children's story that is very popular in Vietnam culture by writer To Hoai. The story narrated the adventure of a cricket named De Men, a youngster who decided to leave his home to expand knowledge of the greater world. Along his journey into the wide open, De Men encountered many other insects, birds, amphibians, whom he managed to make friends as well as foes. While he was hanging out at a tailgate party of a fighting competition, De Men was annoyed by a cocky grasshopper who was the favorite to win the competition. De Men challenged to fight the grasshopper on stage and to go after the crown himself.
The scene we created retold the stage fight between De Men and the grasshopper. The fighting ring was a lotus leave floating on a pond with the audiences being frog, dragonfly, firefly. Since it is a kid story, we didn't want everything to look too realistic; but at the same time, we'd like for the viewers to be able to identify what each of the character is. So we decided that our characters should look half cartoony, half realistic. The surrounding is a festive environment with everything bright and happy since the competition was part of a holiday celebration.

Bee "Many problems I had was getting the UV maping to show up. I couldn't get it to work so I had to just go with some reagular surface maping. Another problem I had was not having enough time and the fact that my computer at home isn't as advance as the ones in lab."
Kyoko The biggest problem that I faced was about how to apply perfect bump map on texture. Especially round objects, such as frog didn't show up bump map, because the bump map did not wrap around the object the way I wanted. So, I had to try applying many different ways, and figured out that cubic is the good way to cover frog. Also, it was first time to make water surface, and I couldn't find any tutorial that explains well. I tried several, but wouldn't explain well, so I couldn't get good surface. When, finally I found this tutorial listed below, and I did what it said. I understand that backdrops and light effect can change the way water looks. Also, the tutorial explains that applying three different bump maps makes the water realistic.
Randy "Modeling organic shape... My original version of the dragonfly had too many polygons that it slowed me down tremendously toward the end as I added more stuff to it. I had to go back and remodel, simplify the shapes, and use "smoothing" to give my character a roundish organic look."
Yao "All members decided to mad our scene look more cartoon. To not make my firefly looks too realistically, I found a good picture as a firefly from the internet. And, I added a light-blub on the tail of my firefly. The light-blub will become one of the light source in our scene."
"Other problems are making the body of the firefly. A insect body is not a square or triangle. I tried many tools to build the body of my firefly. It turns out the box tools plus Tab key that are so usful. I also mad the wings of firefly with a thin box and Tab key. Sepecial, when I build the feet of firefly, that took a lot of time to change each foot in different angles to make all six feet looks differently."
