After my first two projects, I wanted to create a scene that was considerably larger. I have always liked the way water is textured and rendered in Lightwave, so I decided to make an ocean scene. I didn't want to create a typical beach scene looking out to a ocean sunset. I considered a few options and finally decided to have a sailboat cutting through the ocean.
Objective
My scene is made up into three parts. The first part was the boat. I looked at a lot of pictures of new and old large sailboats and created my own design as I sketched my favorite parts. From this sketch I made a somewhat detailed three mast sailboat. Then I created the water after spending a while on the textures. Finally when I was ready to render the final product I messed around with the settings and created just the right sky.

| | Problems and Solutions
I had a hard time creating the sky at first. It was turning out looking flat when I used the widescreen camera. I really wanted to use that camera so I had to do something about the sky. After taking a great tutorial, I became more accustomed to exactly what each setting did in the sky rendering options. I also had trouble with the water's texture. I found that creating multiple layers on the bump texture helped create a more realistic looking stormy ocean.
What would I have done differently?
If I had a little more time to spend on this project, I would have created a better sky, and much more details on the boat. I spent about 3 hours a day for a week to create this ship. If I had another week I would create characters, and an intricate rope system. What I wanted to do the most was spend more time on the light coming from the 6 lanterns and two torches. I think it would make a great night scene.
