Bruce Longacre Final Scene
 9-5
Inspiration

When thinking of something of what to do for my final project, I thought about how I spend my time.  My time is spent either at school, doing homework, or at work.  Since I work four days a week, and it is a big part of my life, I decided to create a replication of the restaurant that I work at, Hula's Chinese BBQ.  Every Saturday and Sunday, I work the 9-5 morning shift, so that and the old song Working 9 to 5 is where I got the name from.  The scene that I created is what the grill area looks like at night and early in the morning when everything is clean and we don't need to cook for anybody.

Problems and Solutions

The biggest problem for me was not being able to do everything for the scene that I wanted to.  As a meticulous person and an engineer, I wanted everything accurate to the last detail.  I had to leave some objects out that I wanted to include, such as a piece of Chinese artwork that I couldn't find a JPEG of, our glass tip jar and doing a floor surface due to time constraints.  The time constraints were caused by the difficulty of my two main surfaces: tile walls and any sort of metal.  Metal has to be one of the toughest surfaces to get exactly what you want.  I wanted some reflection, but not too much.  I wanted it to be shinny, but not too shinny.  Getting the right combination of the surface and lighting was difficult to efficiently find since it took five minutes to render an image, so I could find out it wasn't what I wanted.

Another problem was lining up the tile lines correctly.  What I finally settled on was a bitmap image that I created with MSPaint.  I then projected this image on the box walls to get the tile look.  But since there is a row of maroon tile, I had to cut a strip in the wall boxes to create a new surface.  I then had to auto fit the tile image for the strip, change the X and Z size to the same size as the Y distance, and then change the projection position on all the color and bump surfaces.  This combination is what I battled with most of the time.  When I solved the problem, it made complete sense to me.  I think if I had a little more Lightwave experience, I could have found the solution to my problem a lot quicker.

The last problem I'm going to discuss was the lighting.  I wanted a darker, late night/early morning feel to the scene.  I also wanted the track lighting that is above the counter to have a cool volumetric feel to it.  With the track lights, I wanted the cone to come out right at the extremities of the light hole.  To do this I had to move the light higher into the ceiling.  When I went past the hole that I cut out, the shadow feature blocked out the light.  Since the lights don't affect any object shadows, I turned the shadows off on my track lights and solved my problem.  I also had problems with only having lights in the hood and the track lights.  The room was too dark, and I didn't want ambient lighting, so I added two spotlights that were far away to fill some light into the room.
