Inspiration

Making a modern fighter jet dogfight scene is probably the main reason why I want to take this class.  The idea itself is very unrealistic in current aerial combat situation but the scene is imaginary anyways.  I was originally hoping to make dogfight scene between YF-22 and YF-23, but both aircrafts doesn't fit into dogfight idea very well.  I then turned my attention to Russian jets Su-37 and Su-47.  The forward-swept wing of Su-47 is very ideal for dogfight situation and it looks awesome!  The dogfight takes place at high attitude because I want to create a deep blue sky feeling in my scene.

Problems and Solutions

I originally wanted to model 2 different fighters, Su-37 and Su-47, but it took me my entire Thanksgiving break just to model Su-47.  At the end, I have to give up on modeling Su-37.  That sucks big time!

Camera placement is another hard problem for me.  The average distance between fighters in a dogfight is in km, so making both jets to be in the same shot is extremely difficult.  I have to bring the jets closer to each other so they don't appear too small in the camera shot.  Again this scene is not trying to create realistic aerial combat.

I was also not able to place missile in my scene.  The reason is not because I can't model it.  It is just too small in the scene.  If I place the missile in the scene, then the wind trail left by the missile is the only thing that can be spotted, the actual missile itself is too small.
