Rhiannon Stephens Desk Scene
 My Prison
Inspiration

The idea for this project came very easily. The moment I learned we were to create a desk scene I knew I would recreate my own desk  an area I know very well. There are times when I feel like I live at my desk, and there's no escaping it; hence, the reason I entitled this project My Prison. Luckily my desk appeared complex enough, coupled with the clutter, to pose a suitable assignment.

Problems and Solutions

My biggest problem in this assignment was figuring out the program. By using the internet for tutorials on glass textures and the Lightwave 7.5 Premier textbook for help with figuring out the software, I was able to glean several different tips to create objects and to better enhance my scene. The Lightwave 7.5 Primer textbook had a lot of useful information on the different tools. In modeling, my biggest difficulty was figuring out how to create curved objects.  From the book I found that subdivision and subpatches were very useful in creating curves in my objects. The book also had useful information of the different types of surfaces for when it came time to texture my objects. I wouldn't have known the differences between diffuse, secularity and refraction without the book.

Textures were difficult at first, especially getting the glass to not appear too transparent. Tony's Lightwave 3D wineglass tutorial offered a lot of valuable information of lighting and glass textures. I used his specified setting for the glass texture to achieve the look of the glass in my scene, and I also found the importance of the lighting in the scene to help develop the look of the glass from the same webpage.

Developing the lighting for the scene was difficult as well. I had problems achieving the right look for the lamp; it kept washing out the scene. I ended up having to decrease the cone angle and light intensity to get it to look alright. The other problem was the position of the other three lights I used to get the reflection off the glass to appear, and not affect the composition or chiaroscuro of the scene. I ended up just using trial and error to get a look that I liked.
