Jamison Bloechl Desk Scene
 Untitled
Inspiration

For my desk scene, I didn't have any particular objects that I really wanted to make other than a computer, but that was outside my scope of ability at the time.  The main thing I wanted to accomplish in the scene was to have objects that interacted with one another in a realistic fashion -- proximity, shadows, and so forth.

Problems and Solutions

The desk is composed entirely with the "box" tool.  I created it panel by panel, but I also wanted to add a little complexity by having one of the drawers open wide enough for viewers to see inside.  This meant I couldn't just treat the drawers as a facade, but rather had to create the interior as well.  When I finished with that, all that was left was to texture it.

The pencil was from our first assignment.  I made a couple touchups to it so that it would fit the way I wanted in my scene, but nothing overly complex.

The book had a few interesting points.  To attain the inner curvature of the pages, I first created a solid block and then partly overlapped it with an oval cylinder.  I then made a boolean subtraction.  Making the spine of the book proved to be more difficult than I would have thought. I drew the outline of a cross-section of it and then extruded it along the length of the book, but then realized that I had to create endcaps, since I had extruded a line instead of a surface.  I had to manually fill in the shape with triangles.

I used a similar technique on the bookmark, although I'm sure a much easier solution was available.  I created the series of points that I wanted the edge of the bookmark to follow, then fleshed it out with 3- and 4-vertex polygons.  The problem with doing it this way was that the bookmark has no depth -- it's just a series of planes.

The goblet was very straightforward -- just a lathed curve, but I like how it looks in the scene.
