Gladiator Victory

Inspiration

I wanted to make a scene that had some sort of person in it.  I liked the challenge of modeling a human figure.  I decided to go with a gladiator because I wouldn't have to worry about the clothing as much.  The final scene shows a victorious gladiator after a fight.  His weapon is stained with the opponent's blood.

Problems and Solutions:

I had a hard time getting the Depth of field to work for me.  The problem was that the background didn't blur as much as I wanted.  At first I couldn't see any blur at all!  I adjusted the settings to both extremes and didn't see any difference.  I finally gave up on that method, and I rendered just the gladiator.  I saved the file as a tga image in order to preserve the alpha information.  Then I rendered the background using a focus point incredibly close to the camera.  This blurred the background the way I had hoped, then I just cut the gladiator image, and pasted him on top of the background image.  Another problem was with the crowd.  I had hoped to put a sparse crowd in the background.  Unfortunately I didn't like it when I was done.  I think the image with just the blurry stadium works the best.
