Robert DaileyFinal Scene
Inspiration Through Desperation

The Story:

The story I am attempting to portray in this scene is a little bit of a story about myself.  This scene is a portion of my room and some of the things in it that say a little about myself. The sheet music on the desk in the scene is a guitar piece that I wrote and the little sketch on the back wall of the scene is one that I did years ago.  The photographs on the mirror in my scene are of family and friends.  The rest of the stuff in the scene is there to try and help to make it look a little less dull.

Inspiration:

The inspiration for my scene honestly is just what the title depicts, desperation.  The original idea that I had for my final scene was the downtown park.  However this proved to be much more difficult than I had anticipated (that and I had some problems with some of the punk kids down in the park when I tried to go and take pictures to help me out visually in the construction process.  I had already put two weeks into the other project before I finally decided that it was too much. With that in mind I had to pick something that I was familiar with and that wasn't quite as difficult.  Thus the idea of doing my room was born!

The Technical Stuff:

The hardest part of this scene (other than getting it done on time) was getting all of the textures to look right.  I spent over fifty hours all together on this project (yeah I know it doesn't look all that great for the amount of time I put into it, but bear with me, I am a novice at this
) and almost one third of that was spent in Photoshop doing the textures.  I know that I probably could have gotten more of them online, but I was getting annoyed by some of the comments from other students (you know who you are) that were giving me crap in the critiques for using other sources.  As a result of this I didn't get to make nearly as many objects to put into my scene as I wanted to; and many of the objects that I started were never completed.

A of the objects that I had some particular difficulties with was the soap dispenser.  The dispenser itself wasn't too hard to make, but getting the settings right for the bottle and soap was impossible!  It looks pretty descent in the scene now, but it still doesn't look right.  By cranking the translucency up twenty points higher than the transparency on the soap itself, I was able to get a satisfactory appearance on it.  The bottle still doesn't look very plastic and it reflects the color of the soap in ways that I didn't want it to.
