Inspiration

My inspiration for making this scene came from a memory of assembling a desk I bought for my sister.  I thought was a simple desk with a simple design that was efficient.  The standing lamp was just because I was staring at one when the idea to create the scene came to me.

Problems

The biggest problem for me was that I had no experience in 3D modeling so just learning the program was a little hard.  Very different from PhotoShop and Paintshop.  I had a lot of trouble figuring out the transparency and translucency and couldn't get my glass to come out.  I tried using the presets for the glass but I wasn't sure how to use the glass presets either.  The other problem I had, which I thought was much harder then figuring out the glass was the texturing and lighting of objects so they would look realistic.  I spent a lot of time tweaking the options for the lighting. I kept getting something that was either too bright or too dark when I added my own light.  The lighting also took a lot of time when it came time to rendering.

Solutions

The solution for the glass issue, I just kept looking at tutorials and experimented until I got something nice. My glass isn't the most realistic but it has the needed qualities for now.  For the lighting, I pretty much did what I did with the glass issue.  I scoured the web for information concerning what each tool was for since I didn't know what a lot of the meant to begin with.  I also asked a friend of mine who took the class last semester for tips.
