Richard GehrelsDesk Scene
Memories of Saturdays with my Father

Inspiration

The desk scene resembles the office of my father. With the occasional creative license with textures, all the elements are like I remembered them. The desk is the same so is the sofa and coffee table. When I was younger I would always go with my father when he went into work for half the days on Saturdays. I would sit at his desk and fool around on his computer as well as fooling around with the Xerox machine.

The original idea was to make a retro scene with neon colors, but in the end I decided it was too much of an eye sore. I also was looking to make a different looking table. Not your average rectangular tabletop. That is when I got the idea to make a table like my father's

Problems

When I first saw the scene in layout I was surprised because it looked so small. After playing around I was happy when it looked better. Also the walls were difficult to make in relation to the shadows that were cast upon them. I had to readjust the wall lengths a few times. Also the texture proved a problem because when I applied them and then they disappeared without any warning. Also some of the textures like the one for the poster did not apply in the fashion I wanted. Also positioning the pencil was hard since it really didn't want to stay on a flat surface. It always would go under surface and look weird. In the end I decided to place the pencil on the sofa.

Tips/Hints:

The thing that helped most was doing all my objects as one file instead of a bunch. When I tried to import the pencil into layout it came in segments and was hard to reconstruct. Also I used different techniques to produce some of the objects. I used the lathe tool to make the green lamp base, as well as the lampshade. I also used the boleen tool to merge the two pieces of the table together.
