Dali's Desk

Inspiration:

This piece is based on Dali's works most notably the famous The Persistence of Memory.  For that painting Dali's inspiration was a soft slice of cheese being bent by a pencil on a hot summer day.  This is convenient as one requirement is to include a pencil, so I naturally placed it in the scene bending a slice of cheese.  For the layout I imagined the block in the left of The Persistence of Memory as a desk.  The tree on that block was too big so I moved it down to the ground.  Three of the four clocks in Dali's piece appear in mine.  The model for the wine glass came from a piece by Dali composed of that and a boat.  The light source is a burning camel; this object is a common motif in Dali's works, though I must admit that I am not sure what symbolism he attaches to it.  The chair is based somewhat loosely on the chair from the Dali painting The Chair.  There was too little time to construct many things I had hoped to construct.  The landscape was amongst these things so I put together a desert type landscape, which is relatively simple but works quite nicely, especially with the nice desk outside in the middle of nowhere for no apparent reason.  The sky was another simple addition which turned out nicely.

Problems & Solutions:

Due to time constraints (which is kind of funny because the Persistence of Memory is about the irrelevance of time) I was unable to get through most of what I set out to do.  The first several items I did are quite detailed and appear as good close up as they do far away.  The desk, the chair, and the orange clock are the best examples of this.  The later items however.  The biggest time consumers were trying to work in layout and trying to find good textures.  I found no solutions to these problems.  The lighting was difficult simply because I used several volumetric light sources and had to get them all to look somewhat like one continuous source.

Resources:

I also made use of a volumetric light tutorial from newtek:

and a gallery of Dali's works:  www.dali-gallery.com

And special thanks go to the makers of Google (even if I can't find textures I like).
