Inspiration

My inspiration for this project comes from my interest of learning and reading about different cultures.  I have always been interested in knowing about different cultures and religions.  I decided that maybe this time I wanted to represent my own culture and at the same time let other people know some knowledge of the history of Aztlan.

The Aztecs dominated northern Mexico at the time of the Spanish conquest, led by Hernan Cortes.  One day the Aztecs chief saw their deity the war God, and he told him to that they needed to leave their homeland of Aztlan and to search for a promise land.  They were told to look for the sign of an eagle perched on a cactus grabbing a serpent.  The Aztecs wandered south a couple of years until they finally came across an eagle eating a serpent on a cactus called tenochtli.    In 1325 Tenochtitlan, which is now Mexico City, was built. The location of Tenochitlan was on a mushy island of mud that had limited resources.  The Aztecs had to work constantly in order to start civilization.   Finally the Aztecs were able to construct piping, bridges, mud huts and small temples.

In the Aztec were known for being very religious.  They had numerous gods that ruled over their daily life.  Human and animal sacrifices were part of Aztec religion.  The belief of offering blood through human sacrifice gave the sun nourishment and ensured the perpetuation of the universe.   On top of the pyramids is where the human sacrifices were taken place.  The victims would lay on the their backs as the priest would cut their heart out with a sharp rock, this was a very important event for the Aztecs, they did this with much honor and pride for their gods.
