Emelia Michels-RatliffDesk Scene
Cozy Corner

As I began working on my objects for my final scene, I did not have a definite plan in my head as to what the theme should be.  The program Lightwave is still very new tome, and my biggest goal at first was to experiment with the tools and become more comfortable with the interface.  Therefore, my objects are fairly simple in construction.  It was in layout that a plan began to form more completely.  My intention was to take my fairly simple objects and mold them into a scene with a cohesive welcoming, intimate, and cozy feel.  I began with the desk, pencil and a wine glass, and started adding textures and playing with color.  I then decided to use more of a living room or den style lamp rather than a desk lamp, hoping to bring in a bit of the comfortable feeling of a den.  The wine bottle was added last to complement the wine glass, plus wine is certainly something that can make people feel cozy!  I chose to keep the light dim to add to the intimacy as well, and the stone walls to add a somewhat rustic touch.

Although there are still a great amount of things I need to learn about
Lightwave, I am pretty pleased with the end result of this project.  Most of the problems I encountered were fairly small, and I was able to solve them on my own.  One of the bigger problems I encountered was with my lighting in layout.  After turning shadows on, my scene rendered far darker than I intended it to be.  I then had to explore my light source, as well as the objects surrounding it in order to discover the problem. After moving the light a few times and checking the surface qualities of my lampshade, I then checked the light bulb itself and discovered that it was not transparent enough to let much light shine through.  It was frustrating, but taught me an important lesson about lighting in layout that I know I'll be able to apply in the future.

Overall, I feel I learned quite a bit while working on this project.
There are still a million questions in my head about how I could do this or that, but I think, as with anything, there is not going to be just one answer.  I feel I have a much greater command of the tools now though.
