Course Description: Oracle DBAs manage the industry's most advanced
information systems and command some of the highest salaries. This course is a
first step towards success as an Oracle professional, designed to give a firm
foundation in basic database administration. In this class, students learn how
to install Oracle components as well as create and maintain an Oracle database. Students will gain a conceptual understanding of the
Oracle database architecture and how its components work and interact with one
another. Students will also learn how to create an operational database and
properly manage the various structures in an effective and efficient manner
including performance monitoring, database security, user management, and
backup/recovery techniques. Powerful new Oracle tools are featured
throughout the course. The lesson topics are reinforced with structured
hands-on practices. This course is made possible via the Oracle Academic
Initiative – a partnership between higher education and Oracle Corporation -
and is designed to prepare the student for the corresponding Oracle Certified
Associate exam. If you are unsure if
you meet the prerequisite for the course, please contact Dr. Stapleton at mjstapleton@csuchico.edu.
Course Goals: Students will understand the architecture of an Oracle
11g DBMS and how to perform the basic duties of DBA. Students who perform
well in this course by comprehending the lectures, scoring well on quizzes and
completing all laboratory exercises have a strong chance of passing the
Certification Exam for Oracle 11g - DBA Workshop I

Note: Are you sure you are taking
the right course? This course assumes some maturity in database
management systems in understanding good relational database design (ER and
Object Modeling, normalization). It is mandatory that you have had the
equivalent of 370 or 570 as a prerequisite. If you have not had this
prerequisite, you need to drop the course and enroll in 370 or 570. You
will be required to sign an affidavit that you have taken the prerequisite.
Course Requirements: Regular attendance at BOTH
the labs and lectures is absolutely necessary to succeed in this course.
Attendance is mandatory and will be taken at both the lecture and the lab and
your grade will be docked by one letter grade for every 3 unexcused
absences. If you are going to be absent, email Dr. Stapleton in advance.
Only illness or other serious criteria will be excused absences. Being
too busy with workload or trying to meet a deadline in this or another course
is an example of an unexcused absence. You must learn to balance your
workload to succeed in this class.
Plagiarism/Cheating Policy: Due to recent incidents I
have developed a “NO TOLERANCE” policy towards any form of academic dishonesty,
plagiarism or cheating. Programming assignments and homework assignments
are to be an *individual* effort. Anyone who as determined by the
Instructor/TA has copied any part of another students work will automatically
receive a grade of "F" for the course. Anyone cheating on an
exam will receive a grade of "F" for the course. Anyone who
alters their exam answers after receiving the exam back will receive a grade of
"F" for the course. Anyone who submits work that is not their own
work and does not fully credit their source will receive a grade of “F” for the
course. Anyone who cheats in this course will be reported to Student
Judicial Affairs with the goal of removal from this University and will not be
accepted in any of my courses from that point on.
Course Assignments:
There will be lab exercises assigned from the
Oracle Course Manuals. Students will need to demonstrate completion of
these exercises by a means to be determined by your instructor and TA.
Policy on Turning in Lab and Homework
Assignments: Due
dates are firm. No late assignments will be accepted unless
serious illness or other excused absences merit allowances in the judgment of
the instructor.
Grade Evaluation Procedures: Students will be graded based on their performance in
the following course components -
