What Does Open Source Mean?

Open Source is a software development philosophy that gives the source code used to developed an application (program) to the community at large for making changes to a program or just seeing how it was developed. This is a different philosophy from "proprietary" vendors who maintain than application source code is intellectual property belonging to the company at which it was developed, and is therefore not released to the public.

Linux, the core operating system, and nearly all applications developed for it are Open Source products, meaning end users can view and make modifications to it. In fact, all development of Linux and its applications are made by end users, not a corporation.
