*A note on seeds from 'named variants'; clones and diversity.
The seeds from 'named variants' do not reproduce exact replicas of the cultivar (cv.) from which they derive. While strong resemblance is often found among the progeny, variation should be expected and looked forward to. The seedlings of species (sp.) can also be expected to show divergence of uniformity and phenotypical variation due to open pollination. It is often the case that no two seedlings will be exactly the same. We believe this phenomena to be one of the more interesting facets of propagating trees from seed,-botanic surprises, uniqueness and variation in leaf colour and habit in tree seedlings are welcomed as strong diversity in the garden is a natural and interesting botanic condition in its own right. It should be understood that many vegetatively propagated, widespread 'named variants', originated from open pollinated seedlings.
They are not necessarily more beautiful than many seed produced similiar 'variants',-they are merely one rendition picked by someone from a number of possible variations that for divergent commercial reasons, not all based primarily on the degree of the cultivar's beauty but often its ease of vegetative propagation, -finds its way into the nursery industry where it is sometimes "cloned" in the millions. It is a misperception to assume that 'named variants' have a corner on the beautiful and unique. Many 'named variants' have come and gone over the years and many beautiful seed produced variants are not taken up by the nursery industry due to long lead in times, their need for a streamlined product line or because they prove too difficult to propagate in vast commercial numbers by vegetative (cloning) means. Those not "taken up" remain to the end of their days, unique, one-off seed produced trees with no names propagated by hobbyists and gardeners. A tree doesn't need a vanity tag to be both beautiful and unique. Diversity is a natural condition and a worthy botanic end in itself.
