Dr. J’s General Policies

  ATTENDANCE

Unless otherwise specified, attendance will not be checked. However, the student is held responsible for ALL subject matter and procedural information discussed in class (topics may be covered in the exams). Cases where attendance may be checked include scheduled student presentations, scheduled guest lectures, etc. Required attendance events will be indicated in the course syllabus. Be sure to verify with the professor and the course syllabus if you are unsure when attendance will be required.

Students are responsible for informing their professor of any important religious holidays (please refer to the Interfaith Calendar available online at www.interfaithcalendar.org) that fall on days when they have classes.

Unless prior arrangements are made with the professor, individuals not registered for the course who are sitting in will not be allowed to attend class. Dr. J reserves the right to remove such individuals from the classroom and, possibly, pursue University sanctions against such individuals. Arrangements for “sitting in” must be made by signing up for the course as “Audit” or “Credit/No Credit” (consult the University Catalog for additional information regarding University grading system and policies).

  CLASS DEMEANOR

Dr. J promotes a respectful, cooperative learning environment based on the assumption that everyone attending his class is there because they want to learn.
    1. Please be on time for class. Tardiness may disrupt any ongoing class activity.

    2. It is your responsibility to silence your personal electronic devices (laptops, cell phones, iPods, pagers, etc.) during class. Unless otherwise authorized by the professor, devices equipped with audio/video recording capabilities, must either be turned off during class or kept in your bag.

    3. During class, reading or working on material not related to our class is not acceptable. Laptop use will be prohibited in cases where such use is deemed disruptive to the class.

    4. Asking questions is encouraged, but try not to talk in class unless asking a relevant question or participating in an open class discussion.

    5. Please be mature and professional: Respect each other!

Make it a point to contact Dr. J for any issues/concerns regarding his class. Anyone who does not adhere to the above expected demeanor will be assumed to not want to learn the material being presented in class. In such cases, the student will be warned of their disruptive behavior, and if such behavior persists, the student will be removed from the class and will be reported to Student Judicial Affairs.

  EXAMS

Schedules for all exams will be given in the course syllabus and pointed out on the first day of classes. It is the student’s responsibility to take note of the schedule of all exams so that conflicting appointments may be avoided. Absolutely no makeup test will be given for any missed exam. Excused absences will only be considered as defined in the University Catalog.

If the instructor is notified beforehand as to why an exam cannot be taken as scheduled (and the reasons are approved and decided to be valid by the instructor), the student may take the exam at an earlier date/time. For a student to be excused from an exam, it is the student’s responsibility to provide verifiable documentation indicating reasonable evidence that a particular exam cannot be taken as scheduled. Such documentation must be provided within one week before (or in “serious and compelling” cases, after) the exam’s scheduled date/time.

During an exam:

  1. Students are required to have their valid Chico State ID available for verification with the official class roster. The instructor reserves the right to prohibit a student from taking an exam if the student does not have their valid Chico State ID with them or if a student’s name does not appear in the official class roster. In the latter case, the instructor will pursue further University sanctions against the student.

  2. The instructor reserves the right to require students to take off their caps/hats (or to shift their cap’s bill towards the back of their head) and/or take off their sunglasses so as not to obstruct monitoring of the student’s line of sight.

  3. Students caught cheating during an exam may receive a warning on the first offense. The instructor will take the exam questionnaire (and any answer sheets) away from any student caught cheating and the student will be required to vacate the examination room. The student automatically earns zero credit for that exam. If the same student is caught cheating again on any succeeding exams, the student will earn a grade of “F” on the course and further University sanctions will be filed against the student.

All cases of Academic Dishonesty are reported to Student Judicial Affairs. Please refer to the University Policies and Academic Policies and Regulations, as written in the University Catalog, for more information regarding CSU Chico’s Student Code of Conduct and Academic Responsibility.

All exams are the professor’s intellectual property. Students will have the opportunity to view the examination results after the exam is evaluated and graded. After viewing the exam results, all questionnaires must be returned to the professor. Failure to return the exam questionnaire at that time will result in the student automatically earning a zero score for that exam and further University sanctions may be filed against the student. Students may request to view the exam questionnaire again at a later time during the professor’s regularly scheduled office hours or by appointment.

  QUIZZES

Quizzes may be given either in class or on-line via Blackboard Vista. In-class quizzes are typically given towards the end of a lecture period. The student must be present during the whole class period in order to take an in-class quiz. Absolutely no make-ups are given for any missed quizzes. Quizzes may only be taken in advance when the instructor decides that circumstances prohibit a student from taking it as scheduled.

Students will have access to on-line quizzes immediately after the lecture period of the day the quiz is scheduled. Such quizzes will be delivered through Blackboard Vista and students will have at least 24 hours to decide when to take the quiz.

It is the student’s responsibility to verify the course syllabus for any additional course-specific policies on quizzes.

  WRITTEN HOMEWORK

Unauthorized collaboration is strictly prohibited. Students are expected to submit their own individual work and not the work of another person nor a group of people, unless otherwise specifically allowed by the instructor. Homework problems may come from the textbook. The main purpose of the homework is to give students the opportunity to practice solving problems and/or using techniques discussed in class on their own. Homework problems also give students an idea of what to expect from the exams. Solutions to homework will be due at the start of a given class day/period. These solutions should be neatly stacked on the instructor’s desk at the front of the classroom before the start of lecture.

Dr. J reserves the right to call on any student for an oral presentation of their submitted solution to a homework problem. Such presentations may be set up to either commend the student for the submitted work, or to verify authenticity of the submitted material. The student will be given at least 24 hours notice of when they are supposed to meet in Dr. J’s office for the presentation. Failure to comply will result in a score of 0 for that homework.

Note for remote students:  Remote students should fax their homework to Dr. J at 530 898-5995 and guarantee that it is timestamped by the fax by the start of class, Pacific Standard Time. Faxed copies must have at least 1/2 inch margin on all sides. Margins are required so that no information is overwritten by the fax (e.g. headers, footers, etc.) during transmission.

For your reference, Chico State’s Student Judicial Affairs office has the following documents: “Unauthorized Collaboration,” “Avoiding Plagiarism,” and “Cheating - It’s just not worth it.” Additionally, if part of the course requirement involves writing a paper, be sure to check out Dr. J’s Guidelines for Writing Technical Papers for your reference.

It is the student’s responsibility to verify the course syllabus for any additional course-specific policies on written homework.

  PROGRAMMING ASSIGNMENTS

Unauthorized collaboration is strictly prohibited. Students are expected to submit their own individual work and not the work of another person nor a group of people, unless otherwise specifically allowed by the instructor. Dr. J reserves the right to call on any student for an oral presentation of their submitted solution to a programming assignment. Such presentations may be set up to either commend the student for the submitted work, or to verify authenticity of the submitted material. The student will be given at least 24 hours notice of when they are supposed to meet in Dr. J’s office for the presentation. Failure to comply will result in a score of 0 for that programming assignment.

Programs turned in late will not be accepted and will be awarded no credit. Students are advised to turn in their programs by the due date/time, regardless of the status of their solution, in order to earn some partial credit for their efforts. Unless otherwise specified, the lab instructors will provide students with additional details on guidelines concerning Programming Assignments.

Be sure to review Dr. J’s Coding Standard for Programming Assignments, available at http://www.ecst.csuchico.edu/~juliano/Teaching/Coding%20Standards.html

It is the student’s responsibility to verify the course syllabus for any additional course-specific policies on programming assignments.

  GRADE DISPUTES

Students have the whole semester to inquire their current class standing (either through Blackboard Vista or directly from their instructor) and to contest any perceived grade discrepancies (any given score, grading, or calculated class standing). All grading disputes, including formal disputes (see below) must be made within a week after the item in question was announced, posted, or distributed; otherwise, the instructor reserves the right to decide not to consider the dispute.

Formal disputes may be made in writing through the following procedure:

  1. Submit, in writing, a detailed description of the disagreement in question. The document must have the student’s signature and the date when the student signed it. There should also be an area where the professor can sign and date the document as to when it was received.

  2. The professor will sign and date the said document once it is received. At that time, the professor and student may discuss the discrepancy or an appointment may be made so that both professor and student can review and discuss the said disagreement.

  3. The professor will make a decision on the matter no later than one (1) week after the discussion in item #2 above. This decision and any related settlement will be made in writing, and a copy of this document will immediately be returned to the student.

  OTHER MATTERS

Students are responsible for reading and being aware of the following:

Dr. Juliano does not hold regular office hours during finals week, so be sure to check his office for availability during finals week. Appointments may be made if necessary (availability based on that week’s schedule). Walk-ins are welcome only if his office door is open.

Under no circumstances should students inquire (in person, through the phone, etc.) about their final grades during finals week and the week after. Dr. Juliano will post final grades (for students requesting such) as soon as they are available. If a student wishes to contest any perceived grade discrepancies this late in the semester, the above procedure must be followed; however, all such matters must be settled before final grades are submitted to the Registrar’s Office.

Any questions regarding the above policies should be discussed with the professor before the end of the second week of classes.
