Dr. J's Guidelines for Writing Technical Papers

Department Standard:

Effective Spring 2003, the Department of Computer Science has agreed to use the IEEE Transactions on Computers as a document standard for all M.S. thesis/project manuscripts. The IEEE Transactions on Computers uses the Transactions Department References style guide of the IEEE Computer Society's Style Guide (you may also refer to IEEE Computer Society's References style guide for additional information). To familiarize yourselves with this documentation standard, Dr. J recommends that you use this style for all papers you write for courses in the department. Additionally, you may also refer to the IEEE Transactions LaTeX and Microsoft Word Style Files for templates and style files. (Note: The sample files are formatted in two-column format for Journal submission; you will have to make the necessary adjustments for your particular needs.)

Note: This document standard is also recommended for all other papers and reports (e.g. for CSCI 490) submitted by students in the department.

Examples: Here are some sample journal articles in PDF that use the Style Guide: 1 (RFID security), 2 (DSP algorithms), 3 (virtual caches). In particular, please take the time to familiarize yourself with the organization and styles for presenting algorithms, figures, tables, citations, and list of references (both printed and online).

Note:  If the above links to IEEE Computer Society's portal do not work, the following are available as PDF files:
