The Whitney Hall Duke Nukem Project

Just what is the WHDNP, and why should I care?

The Whitney Hall Duke Nukem Project (WHDNP) is an attempt by Gabriel Helman (me), and a few of my cohorts, to accuratly model the Dorm Whitney Hall as a Duke Nukem 3D level. Just think! Run down the halls of a real college dorm, looking into the accuratly recreated rooms of real residents, blazing away with a shotgun! The dream of every colledge student! (Well, ours, at least.)

What will it be like?

The level will soon to be available in two versions: Tame and Cool.

Tame is the version you show your parents, to demonsatrate what real dorms look like (guns, monsters, and, uhhh, adult content not included). It will just be the dorm hall, complete with furniture. Take your parents on a tour of the dorm without actaully having to have them come up! I took my mom on a tour with our test version, and it actually worked!

Cool will be the full version designed for Dukematch. Not only will we toss in all the R rated stuff we couldn't morally put in what is virtually a dorm ad, we'll also put in guns, monsters, and the like. You'd be surpised how well the early test version acutally works in dukematch.

What is the current status of the Project?

We started by just building the fourth floor, on which we live. We've got the basic layout, and some furniture in place. Basic, impassable windows are in position, and we are in the process of finishing the level.

New: Doors have finally been implemented correctly.

We want to have the whole dorm in place, complete with elevators, stairs, and jumping out of windows, but the way the Duke 3D engine works is giving us some headaches. We're pushing the Build engine way further than I've ever seen it done, and it's having problems coming through.

Our progress as a chart:
Fourth floor:
Basic design: Done
Additions:
Tame: 78%
Cool: 70%
Whole building:
Basic Design: 10%
Additions:
Tame: 5%
Cool: 5%

This progress report is mostly a lie, but an amusing lie.

The Project has hit a major snag, in that non of us actually live in the dorm any longer. Sadly, the level was all but abandoned a year ago, I am currently working on converting the old beta test type levels into a playable, stripped down version, as time permits. Stand by, we may get this done yet, folks. No one wants to play this more than me...

Also, It would be cool if we could implement this in something a little more timely (Jedi Knight, Quake II, etc.). I'll look into this, but if anyone has any good ideas or skill, be sure to let me know...

What can I get now?

The level is currently available in no versions, due to techinal problems, laziness, and so forth.

Keep checking back for more updates!
