  • Create an aesthetically appealing photograph with the subject on the edge of the photograph. The subject needs to touch or be very close to at least one edge of the photo frame. Use the remaining space to create weight and eye movement.
  • Take a variety of photographs.
  • Subject must be no closer than 2 to 3 feet (an arm lengths away).
  • Images will be converted into grayscale for composition clarity.
  • You must shoot at least 60 exposures and turn in all exposures without cropping.
  • Make one final print.

  1. Learn to recognize composition guidelines in photographs.
  2. Learn to use compositional guidelines to place emphasis on subjects.
  3. An emphasis on graycsale images by adjustmenting values, cropping, and printing.

The frame creates the following:
  • Defines the photograph’s edge and content.
  • Isolates and creates unexpected compositions.

  • Before clicking the shutter – CHECK THE CORNERS OF THE FRAME – ask yourself -“Is everything I see essential to this picture?
  • Lines of movement: Use lines within the frame to guide the viewer's eye to important subject elements or through an image.

In Your “final” photographs must follow “one” of the following guidelines:
  • Golden mean (or rule of thirds): Place important subject elements on a 1/3 intersection point.
  • Subject needs to touch at least one edge of the photo.

  • Take at least 60 images and rename files by project (Edge_Yourlastname) and number sequence.
  • Create a web gallery with 60 images. Place all associated files that are generated from photoshop in to this directory "EdgeGallery_Yourlastname".
  • Rename the image that best meets requirements for the assignment “Edge1_Yourlastname.psd” in a PSD format. Put the image in a folder called "Edge_Yourlastname".
  • Rename your second best image "Edge2_Yourlastname.psd". Put the image in the same folder called "Edge_Yourlastname".
  • Follow the naming conventions and file structure stated in the graph below.
  • The final photograph should be printed on 8.5x10 inch size (or as close as possible to accommodate your chosen framing) paper. You can choose what paper finish best compliments your image.
