We all know Intel's chips are slow. If you're not convinced you can read the articles and benchmarks I have collected. From Byte Magazine (Bytemarks): Oct 95 132mhz 604 against a 133mhz Pentium. Nov 95 PowerPC 604,Pentium,PentiumPro,Mips,DEC Alpha Aug 96 200mhz 604e against a 200mhz PentiumPro and 200mhz Pentium Feb 97 Photoshop with Pentium, PentiumMMX, PentiumPro, PPC604e Other Bytemarks: from Penn State Mine is Faster Than Yours A study based on Bytemark results. SPEC: Graphs of SPEC 95 ratings: (PPC 603e, 604, 604e , Pentium, Pentium MMX, Pentium Pro, and Pentium II) specint95 specfp95 More Spec 95 graphs Apr 95 Datamation overview of the old PowerPC 601 vs. Pentium. PCWeek review of the old PowerMac 9500/132. "The Power Mac 9500/132 was twice as fast as the Gateway in all Photoshop tests but one, and even there it bested the Pentium PC by 58 percent." Germany's c't magazine: Nov 96 A technical article comparing PowerPC 603e & 604e to Pentium & PentiumPro. Jan 97 Comparing PowerPC to MMX Pentium. "In a practical application, like the beta version of Photoshop 4.0, MMX is at the most equal to the PowerPC, often the MMX system is even drastically inferior. Though the software is 'MMX optimized', according to Adobe, it only selectively shows a distinct performance increase."Jul 97 Early review of G3 "Just for fun we performed not only the platform independent HINT-Bench, but also the 'bilinear interpolation' an algorithm that Intel uses in its own Media-Benchmark for trying to show off the advantages of MMX technology. Intels overkill-processor Pentium II with manually optimized MMX Assembler code was not able to notch up any advantage compared to the PowerPC with standard C (!). In fact, a 200 MHz with MMX was even only half as fast. Without using MMX instructions Intels fastest Pentium line was hopelessly inferior."Oct 97 Look at the floating point performance of the 300mhz Pentium II. Seattle Online The Mac VS. Wintel - Who is Faster? "Ever think that your 200mhz MMX equipped Pentium Pro could be outshined by anything? Well, guess what, it is. Believe it or not, Apple's Macintosh computers are the fastest desktop and laptop computers available to consumers." A Sydney Morning Herald article on the newest PowerPCs and Pentiums.(1/21/97) "the Pentiums now lag seriously in clock speed." "Apple says the 533MHz Mac will have twice the performance of the fastest Pentium Pro machines. It has already demonstrated a 450MHz model and a 200MHz PowerBook (with the odd codename of Hooper) should hit the market in about two weeks. So far, no Windows notebook runs at that speed."NOTE: The PowerBook 3400 240mhz model is out. Some Mathematica 3.0 Tests Notice how NextStep (the next MacOS) outperforms Win95 and NT by almost a factor of two. X704 PowerPC: Exponential Technologies Makers of the 533mhz X704 PowerPC chip. They have shut down though, because Apple will use the PowerPC G3 chip insetad of the X704 in the new PowerMacs. Feb 97 Newmedia Article on X704. "Preliminary benchmarks, with more speed to be squeezed out, indicate performance greater than double that of a 200MHz Pentium Pro on typical CPU-intensive tasks such as running Photoshop filters."Dec 96 Byte Magazine article on the X704. Pentium II Articles: PCWeek March 24, 1997 Not so fast, Pentium II Why the Pentium II isn't all Intel wants you to think (It doesn't even deserve the 'II'). "Because of that drawback, the performance of a 233MHz Pentium II with a 512KB cache option is at or below that of a 200MHz Pentium Pro with 256KB cache, sources said. Here's the AnchorDesk artitle on the Pentium II release. Another article on the Pentium II's performance, with benchmarks. MacUser (May 7,1997) Pentium II: The Empire Strikes Out. An article comparing PhotoShop on Pentium II systems and PowerPCs. NewMedia (Feb 10, 1998) Power Mac G3 Pentium bugs: Oops, another bug: Looks like the Pentium II and Pentium Pro have got a new math bug. (May 2, 1997) news.com: Questions raised on Pentium chips. (May 9, 1997) Intel posts explanation, "it's not serious, we swear" Digital sues Intel Intel's copying Digital's work. Tisk, tisk. another bug MMX: Hype, hype. PBS Online (Apr 24, 1997) A nice article about how Intel fools people with it's MMX marketing. Basically, they've been optimizing some specific routines in PhotoShop so they can show everyone the 'benefits' of MMX. Unless you spend all day using the gaussian blur filter with a 4 pixel radius, don't expect too much. "Intel not only made the chip faster, they made the application slower, but just for certain processor types. Popular Science July 1997 Mac vs. MMX G3 and Mach 5 chips: MacInsider Pentium II vs. Mach 5 & Arthur: Good Things Come in Small Packages "...the two PowerPC processors are smaller in size, less expensive per CPU, and run cooler than the PII. They also offer considerably better floating point performance -- the 300MHz PII has a SPECint rating of 11.6 and a SPECfp rating of 7.2 while a 300MHz Arthur clocks in at a SPECint rating of 12.2 and a SPECfp rating of 11.8. And last but not least, thanks to their smaller die sizes, the two PowerPC processors have significantly lower overall power consumption than the PII. In fact, Arthur uses a mere 5 watts vs. a whopping 42 watts for the 300MHz PII!"MacUser Sep 1997 New Chip Doubles Mac Speed A preview of the PowerComputer PowerTowerPro 275 MacWorld Sep 1997 275 MHz Mac Powerhouse G3 MacWeek July 25, 1997 Motorola to announce CHRP system at expo G3 "According to sources, the system will provide more than twice the performance of a comparable-speed Intel-standard PC running a Pentium II with MMX."MacAddict G3 upgrade card preview "Though this was the "entry-level" Arthur - 270 to 300MHz versions should be available soon - the speed was double that of the fastest Mac on the market today. You read it right: twice as fast. Benchmarks came in at twice those of a Power Mac 9600/200, and the Newer guys told us that they've seen 20-30% better on early versions of the faster chips in systems with large L2 caches." "Point is, we're on the cusp of an exciting evolution of the Mac, just on the hardware side. In so many words, Macs will kick any PC's butt six ways to Sunday."The Australian Online June 10 Mac owners don't need 'MMX envy' "At last month's WorldWide Developers Conference, a prototype G3 desktop Mac was publicly put to the test against a 266MHz Pentium II-based PC, mainly running demanding Adobe Photoshop tasks. It performed about 70 per cent faster than the Intel/Windows machine. And that's without VMX: next year's technology." [an error occurred while processing this directive] |
