For great information on spam, see

One of the few things I really hate about the internet is spam. And the worst kind of spam, the slimiest, most irritating kind, is junk email. When I get junk email, I always complain to the ISP of the user who sent it to me, as well as the ISP that provides them domain service.

Often, especially if your post to the misc.invest groups, you will get a number of unsolicited "financial opportunities". Almost all of these are illegal under US law. If you receive a pyramid scam (also known as a Chain Letter), you can report it to the Federal Trade Commission at pyramid@ftc.gov.  (The FTC does follow up on these reports). If you get some other kind of suspicious or fraudulent offer, you can report it to the National Fraud Information Center and they will take care of it. In either case, be sure to send in the complete message.

You can also report spam to the Internal Revenue Service!

Sent from: "Eric H." burnout@heathers.stdio.com:

When you send a complaint (with full headers and all) to reputable
postmasters, don't forget to send a copy to the IRS.

It seems they did a quick study of spammers and found that a lot of them
forgot to report the income they get from their virtual businesses.

So the IRS, everybody's favorite care bears in wingtips, set up an e-mail
list to gather suspects.

Any info you send will help your favorite spammers the attention they are
craving.
If you receive an annoying unsolicited ad for face cream or whatever, normally you can't do much besides complain to the spammer's internet service provider (ISP). But sometimes you get lucky, and the moron who sent you the junk email has included a toll-free number for more information. This means that if you are in the USA, you can call the knucklehead that put trash in your email and charge it to him! This is just beautiful. Sometimes you can get ahold of a live person, or you can leave a message. I like to say "I got your junk email and although I have no interest in your company or products, I just wanted to call you up to waste some of your time and money. Bye!" More often, you will get an automated recording--the longer the better. You can put the phone down and let the pellethead on the other side drone on and on and you don't even have to listen.

If you want to share your opinion with one of these bozos, or just run up their phone bill, here is a list of toll-free numbers from spam that I have personally received. Call today, preferably during business hours when rates are highest.

One thing I particularly like to do is call up a couple of 800 numbers and conference them together, then put them on hold. I like the 800 613 3460 number for one (it repeats for about 10 minutes), and a "leave a message" type on the other. Then one spammer gets another's spiel. Be sure to explain what you are doing before you start the conference. And remember, you are running up TWO spammers' phone bills at the same time!

Here's another great suggestion from someone I'll just call Oscar:

Another thing that I like to do takes a bit more time but I think it may be worth it:

1. Set fax preferences to retry fax transmission 10 or 20 times.
2. Queue a fax to be sent to a list of spammers 800 numbers (doesn't matter that it's not a fax machine, it's the connection charge we are going after).
3. Let it rip before leaving the office/home.

Voila` Spamming the spammers.
Good idea, Oscar. I like it a lot.

But I don't live in the USA and can't dial 800/888 numbers!

A reader of this page wrote the following to me in mail:
Hey @Man,

I like your 800# page for spammers.  I wanted to drop a suggestion.
You stated that if you live in the US you can cost spammers money,
BUT I found that Net2Phone will allow free 800 & 888 calls from
anywhere in the world.  Not to mention anonymous calls if you fudge
the registration part.

Anyway,  Here the link http://www.net2phone.com/

I Do NOT support this software or sponsor it, I just thought It could
be a nice tool to your readers and anti spammers world wide.

Peace.

Someone outside the USA please give it a try with some of the numbers below and let me know if it works.

Toll-free numbers of email spammers

You might want to block caller ID before dialing these. That is *82 in many places, prior to dialing the number

Thanks to Jeffy of Cardhouse Productions for this tip!

Snailmail Addresses and Phone Numbers of Spammers and Spam Enablers

Feel free to express your opinion to these people.   All of this information (like the numbers above) came from publically available information, usually spam.  In otherwords, it was information someone didn't want but had rammed down their throat anyway.
