Making snapshots of screens
UNIX
Get into xv
- do a grab
- makes a window - you can save (click on picture with right button
if lost xv window - then save)
- save it - as a .ps to print, or save as a .gif, etc
-
when grab makes the beep, you can then make the area of which you
want the picture...when let up it snaps
-
if do autograb, it will grab the window the cursor is in (this can be used for popup menus)
Windows
For the PC, look on the web for Paint or Paint Shop Pro,
www.yahoo.com got it fast...and there are a lot of free sources
This is a nice tool for snapshots for PCs -
but actually there is a Paint program (Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> Paint) that works the same.
- open Paint (or Paint Shop Pro)
- make the window you want to save (what you want to show me) the currently active one (i.e., what you are working on)
- hit PrintScreen (key at upper right) - this will save to the clipboard
- go to Paint (or Paint Shop Pro) Edit Paste
to crop
- choose area want (rectangular area)
- go to image menu: crop (crops all around)
- save as a gif or jpg
another tool is at www.gimp.org
OR
similarly in Windoze 95 you can use PrtScr to save an image
of the currently active window to the clipboard and then
paste it into a word processor or paint tool. A little fancy cropping
(click on the image to get the picture toolbar)
of the image and you will have an Object Model
Macs
To get the whole screen hit: Command (Apple key) + Shift + 3
To get a cursor to select a portion of the screen hit: Cmd + Shift + 4
On my machine, it saves to the top directory with a title of Picture
