Studying for the Comprehensive Core Exam
I am constantly being asked what to study when preparing for the CCE.
This is a test that is determining if you have understood the core Masters courses.
In answer to a repeated question..."Do I need to study everything in the syllabus?"
Yes, you do need to study all of the notes from the class
In answer to a repeated question..."What should I do to prepare?".
- Go through the notes of the course and remind yourself of terminology and the example problems from each section. Make an outline of the course to help you remember all that was done.
- It is better to understand this material in your own words rather than memorizing everything.
Write a sheet with the concepts but use it to refresh and solidify your thoughts rather than memorizing.
The test is close book and closed notes so this sheet cannot be used for the test but it is a valuable tool from which to prepare and study.
- Try all of the problems in the example previous exams
- Get together with other students taking the test or taking the course and discuss the materials and tests with them. This is a great help in seeing
if you really do understand it...can you talk about it without using memorized phrases?
Each person should try the test questions and then as a group you can discuss your answers.
This usually leads to discussions which help all to understand the concepts better. If someone in the group says something that you do
not understand, or do not agree with, then discuss it until everyone is clear and agrees.
Such discussion
enhances understanding tremendously.
- Don't forget that the web is available to assist with answers to questions as well!
- I will not use office hours to answer any questions unless it is obvious that you have done the items above and have notes that clearly show as such.
Specifically, the previous exams are there for you to study from and to review the material. They are not there
for you to ask someone else for the answers and then memorize the answers. In general, I will not answer questions, but rather ask
you more questions about where you would look for the answers. SO, I suggest you work with others in studying so you can
work out reasoning together.
