Suppose you organized your lab into major decisions. If you can do this, I would say that on a breath level from the top node, there should be three alternatives.
Then, for each of those three choices, you should go two more levels down, so that basically each node could have three choices.

This would generate a design tree of 40 nodes (1 -- 3 -- 9 -- 27). Thus, one should have a system that allows 40 options. (about)
