CSCI 111 Getting Started

There is a lot of beginning (some necessary and some optional) information.
So that you do not get too confused too quickly, I have separated these into different files.
You will probably see more of this information throughout the class as we move along, either in lecture or in labs.

Getting an ECST account
About machines and java
Using machines from home:
- Access ECST machines from your PC using putty
- A nice Windows GUI that allows access to your local machine and your ECST account WinSCP. How to use
- You would want to have Java downloaded and installed on your home machine
- Copying files from one machine to another requires a File Transfer Protocol like WS_FTP OR WinSCP (above)
- A nice integrated development tool that we will look at is Eclipse
Using MACs Thanks to Jordan Layman
- For explicit directions for MAC tools which function like PuTTY and WinSCP
- Others:
  - FTP:
    - filezilla -- A freeware utility similar to WinSCP but runs on MacOSX, Linux, and Windows. For this class you would only need the Client. The site also provides some nice screenshots to help you see how it works (thanks to Michael Daily)
    - Fetch -- Basic FTP and probably SFTP.

    - Interarchy -- Stairways SW advanced FTP client. Works well with BBedit.

    - Transmit -- Panic's FTP client. Never used but have heard good things

  - Developer Tools:

  - Text Editors:
    - BBedit -- Awesome editor with hundreds of features for a long list of languages.

    - TextMate -- Supposed to have different and more advanced features than BBedit
      Most people use both of these interchangeably

  All these Apps are shareware with the exception of Terminal which comes with OSX and maybe Fetch.
Using UNIX machines:
- How to edit files using UNIX Editors
- UNIX shells define your working environment. You can change them if you like. One shell different than the ECST default is the Bash Shell
