My Background
I am the oldest of three children. My sisters Xotchilt, 20, and Genia,
18, both attend College of the Siskiyous and live with my mom Anita.
Growing up in Dunsmuir gave me many opportunities to get involved with the
community and the schools. I became involved in the Chamber of Commerce,
City Council, and Down Town Dunsmuir Association in high school. In high
school I became very active in student council and various clubs.
Dunsmuir, being as small as it is, I also played football, basketball,
baseball, and tennis.
I transfered to Butte College in 1992 and moved to Chico. It was at Butte
college that I truly fell in love with student activism. I became
involved with M.E.Ch.A., an organization focusing on Latino issues, and
soon found my niche in student activism. I became President of M.E.Ch.A.
when the organization was falling apart due to turmoil, debt, and lack of
membership. I managed to revive it and return it to past glories. I
also became involved with the Associated Students as Director of Community
Relations.
I am now finishing my second year at Chico State. After one more semester
I plan on graduating in Political Science and entering graduate School.
Here at Chico I have continued my involvement in M.E.Ch.A. and in the
Associated Students. In the AS. I have served on the Bell Memorial Union
Committee, Multicultural Affairs, and Celebration of People. Currently I
am Commissioner of Multicultural Affairs. Presently I am working on
International Festival, and with President Esteban on Multicultural issues
and recruitment programs.
My Plan
The office of AS. President could be quie a force if manifested to its
fullest. There are several issues that have never been addressed by past
AS presidents.
RECRUITMENT
Chico State is in serious trouble in terms of enrollment. A decrease in
enrollment must also be a concern of the Associated Students for several
reasons. For one, the AS owns the bookstore and operates all the food
service vernues on campus. In business terms, the more students there
are, the more books and food gets purchased. That means more money for
the AS corporation and programs like CLIC, CAVE, Childrens Center, and
Womens Center. That also means more money for student funding councils
like RAC, Activity Fee, and Multicultural Affairs. Also, the more
students there are the more money the University gets. Chico State has
already lost too many programs due to budget constraints.
I want to propose a program that encourages, recognizes, and rewards
student organizations that recruit students to Chico State. Some
organizations are already recruiting on their own. These organizations
should be recognized and supported by the University and the AS.
STRONGER LEADERSHIP
The AS needs leadership that won'’t fold under pressure. This year the
AS has had lots of pressing issues that could have been handled better.
The elimination of the football program is something that I refuse to let
die. If we had stronger leadership in the Executive positions the outcome
would have been different.
AS INTERNSHIPS
The only people that tend to seek AS office are those that have prior
connections in the AS. I believe that there are many students with great
AS leadership potential, but just have no connections to the AS. That is
why I am proposing that AS officers go into class rooms and speak with
students about their positions in the AS. During freshman orientation AS
officers will be available to meet with new students and their parents.
There should also be and internship program established with Continuing
Education to get students into the Associated Students.
