As a future teacher I am interested in children's literature. I feel that literature is extremely important as a way of encouraging children to use their imaginations. Though many authors do a wonderful job of conveying the enthusiasm essential to our youth, Brian Jacques (pronounced Jakes), excels in this endeavor.
Jacques is a fine example of an author who is comfortable using sophisticated language in children's stories (though these are actually novels). What better way to expose children to the potential of our language, than to immerse them in well written and captivating literature? When read aloud, children not only understand, but are drawn into the adventure and the imagery which seems to surround the listener. I look forward to using Jacques' "Redwall" series one day in my classroom.
