EECE 451: Lasers and Their Applications
Prerequisites:PHYS 204C

Catalog Description: The
theory and mechanism of laser action, various types of lasers and
their applications and future use. Laboratory involves
measurements with lasers, fiber optics, data transmission, and
holography. Formerly ECE 231.
Course Objectives:
understand the principles of laser
- explain the properties of laser light
- understand the operations of different types of lasers
- become familiar with laser safety
- explain how material processing is accomplished with
lasers
- understand holography and its application
- introduce basic fiber optic communication systems
- introduce metrological applications
Course Outcomes:
Students shall be able to:
- identify the four elements of different lasers
- estimate stability requirements
- recognize different laser modes of oscillation
- use different methods to modulate laser output
- evaluate laser safety for ocular exposure
- estimate laser operation parameters for material
processing
- make different kinds of holograms
- recognize components of optical fiber communication
system
- understand the fundamentals of laser metrology
Class/Laboratory schedule:
- One hundred minutes a week lecture
- One hundred and seventy minutes a week lab
