EECE 450: Optics
Prerequisites:PHYS 204B, PHYS 204C
Elective
Catalog Description:
Geometrical and physical optics, interference, diffraction,
reflection, dispersion, resolution, polarization, fiber optics,
laser optics, and holography. Formerly ECE 230.
Course Objectives:
- learn Maxwell Equations and propagation of Electromagnetic
Waves
- understand reflection and refraction electromagnetic
waves
- become familiar with lenses, mirrors and geometric optical
instruments
- understand dispersion, polarization, interference and
diffraction of electromagnetic waves
- explain the principles of holography
Course Outcomes:
Students shall be able to:
- measure and calculate the polarization and intensity of
reflected and refracted electromagnetic waves
- use wave plates and polarizer's to modify polarization of
electromagnetic waves
- operate different interferometers for wave front and
spectral analyses
- understand the structure of multilayer thin film coating as
optical filters
- measure and calculate Fraunhafer and Fresnel diffraction
patterns
- use lenses and mirrors for image formation
- make different types of holograms
Class/Laboratory schedule:
- One hundred minutes a week lecture
- One hundred and seventy minutes a week lab
