CSCI 346: Introduction to Computer Networks and Network Management Back to List

Catalog Description:
This course is an introduction to basic knowledge of networking technologies and network management concepts, including major network operating systems, communication protocols, and the supporting network hardware and software. The course emphasizes the hand-on experience of network management in a laboratory environment. 2.0 hours discussion, 2.0 hours activity. Formerly CSCI 178.

Course Objectives:
The objectives are for the students to:
  • Understand the basic concepts of computer networks and network management,
  • Understand how computer network functions; including networking hardware, NOS(Network Operating Systems), network protocol architecture,
  • Configure/manage/troubleshoot a desktop NOS.

Course Outcomes:
Students shall be able to:
  • Recognize the functions of OSI protocol layers,
  • Understand/contrast the protocol architectures such as OSI and TCP/IP,
  • Understand existing LAN(Local Area Network) technologies,
  • Configure/manage the networking features of Microsoft Windows OS,
  • Maintain/troubleshoot Microsoft Windows workstations; networking setups, user management, sharing resources, troubleshooting hardware/software problems.

Class/Laboratory schedule:
     One hundred minutes a week lecture
     One hundred minutes a week laboratory activity
