CSCI 313H: Mind in the Machine-Honors Back to List
Previous Page Next Page

Prerequisites: Acceptance into the Honors Program; faculty permission.

Catalog Description:
An Honors seminar that explores the psychological, philosophical, social, biological, and technical aspects of machine "minds". Explores core issues within a subset of the disciplines that comprise the cognitive sciences, including artificial intelligence, philosophy, and psychology.   Readings and discussions focus on theories of artificial intelligence and classic themes in human cognition and philosophy, such as determinism, consciousness, free-will, and the mind-body problem. The course focuses on increasing one's capability to express beliefs and evaluate arguments concerning various issues. This is an approved General Education course.  Formerly CSCI 116H.  This course is the same as PSYC 332H.

Course Objectives:
The primary objective of this course is to draw an awareness and curiosity to the questions surrounding mind and the possibility of replicating mind or human intelligence. The course will seek to promote methods for critical analysis, discussion, and debate of problems with unknown solutions, within the realm of cognitive science.
Specifically:
  • Human Cognition  Explore the issue of what we are.  In particular, we will consider the notion that mind is a form of information processing.  We will investigate this and related issues with respect to discoveries in cognitive psychology, especially within the areas of perception, memory, problem-solving and culture. (B)
  • Artificial Intelligence  Review current technologies and debates in AI research. Specifically, the role of symbol manipulators and representations in the instantiation of knowledge, intelligence, and consciousness. Speculate on limits and social implications of AI applications, and the responsibilities of those who develop them. (B)
  • Philosophy  Revisit the historically important western concepts of 'determinism' and 'free will', with focus on the mind-body problem.  Consider the relationship of the mind and brain.  Discuss major theories such as dualism, functionalism, and materialism. (B)

Course Outcomes:
Students will have developed the ability to:
  • Debate intelligently and diplomatically on the issues surrounding cognition and AI.
  • Reason about theories of Consciousness, symbol manipulation, and computation.
  • Continue to formulate personal questions and theories about cognition, consciousness, mind, intelligence, and limits of AI.

Class/Laboratory Schedule:
Three hours per week in discussion.

Relationship of Course to Program Objectives:
This course supports the achievement of the following program objectives:
  1. All students will be effective oral and written communicators and be able to function effectively as members of multi-disciplinary teams. (P)
  2. All students will have an appreciation for the individual, society, and human heritage and they will be aware of the impact of their work on society and the environment. (R)
  3. Those graduates who pursue advanced degrees will have the skills to succeed in graduate programs in computing and related fields. (I)
