Mandatory Advising Top of Page

Advising is mandatory for all majors in the College of Engineering, Computer Science, and Construction Management. Meeting with your advisor on a regular basis will facilitate the successful and timely completion of your degree program. Note that mandatory advising applies to graduate students as well as undergraduates. You should meet with your advisor (see advisor assignments above) during the first few weeks of every semester to work out a program plan for the following semester.

Undergraduates, do the following before meeting with your advisor:
  • print a copy of your current transcript (available through your Portal account)
  • print a copy of your Grad Clearance Form and fill out as much as you can
                                                  Computer Science majors:
                                        CS Grad Clearance Forms

                         Computer Information Systems majors:
                                        CIS Grad Clearance Forms

Graduate Students, do the following before meeting with your advisor:
  • print a copy of your current transcript (available through your Portal account)

Bring these forms when you meet with your advisor. During the advising session, your advisor will sign your proposed schedule. You will keep one copy and a second copy will will be forwarded to the Computer Science Depatment Office for filing.  Students who do not have a proposed schedule approved and signed by their advisor will have a registration hold placed on their account, and will not be allowed to register for classes. The hold will be removed 24 hours after a schedule signed by an advisor is submitted.

Catalog Top of Page

The requirements for your degree program are set forth in the catalog in exact detail. A new catalog is published every two years. You have a choice as to which version of the catalog you follow:

As long as you maintain continuous attendance at CSU, Chico, or a combination of CSU campuses and California Community Colleges (CCC), you may elect to meet the graduation requirements in effect:
  1. at the time you began your college program at any one of the California State University campuses or California Community Colleges,
  2. when you entered the CSU campus from which you intend to graduate, or
  3. at the time you graduate from a campus of the California State University.
All versions of the catalog can be found here.

The current version of the Computer Science catalog pages are here.

Guides Top of Page

There are two very helpful documents produced by the Computer Science Department to help you plan your course of study. These are the Major Academic Plan (MAP) and Prerequisite Chart. These documents are fondly called the "4 year plan" and are produced for each major and for each catalog.

                        CIS Grad Clearance Forms
                        Minor Grad Clearance Forms

GE Top of Page

The University requires a certain number of courses to create a General Education (GE).  Details are provided in the University Catalog.

Click here for a copy of the University's  Academic Planning Sheet for GE.

Students in Computer Science often choose either Theme J or Theme M to allow for "double counting".
  • Specifically, a course in Theme J (either CSCI 380 or CSCI 381) could be used as the Theme requirement as well as a CSCI elective.
  • In Theme M, students in general, systems, math/science and graphics options can use CSCI 301(required in the CSCI core) as well as BIOL 303 (for the Natural Science requirement).

Transfers Top of Page

For transfers from Community Colleges within California, the website www.assist.org shows the agreements currently in place.  See this webpage for assistance.  Only CSUC courses under the 300 level can be credited  through a course transferred from a Community College.
  • Please note that the Computer Science Department does not determine which GE courses can be transferred. The Office of Admissions determines which General Education courses will transfer and to which category they apply.  The Office of Admissions decides which courses can transfer when the student is admitted. To apply for admission to the university and the Computer Science Program,  request an application. Advising is also available through the university for GE.
For Computer Science transfer courses (from institutions that do not have an articulation agreement or for upper division courses) your advisor (from the list above) will need to see a copy of transcripts, catalog copy and a syllabus of the course that you want to transfer so that they can compare the course for equivalency.
