The proposed center concept is based on the collective vision of the university, the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), and the Pavement Preservation Task Group (PPTG), a partnering group made up of agencies and industry.
The purpose of the center is to advance the knowledge, technology and practice of pavement preservation. Roads are not public expenditures; they are investments in our society that need to be protected. The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) approach to protecting investments is called asset management. A true application of asset management is through pavement preservation or by “doing the right thing to the right road at the right time.” Managing our investments is important to state and local agencies in California and to the private sector. Specific objectives of the center will include the following:
Serve as a technical resource for pavement preservation activities within the state of California.
Educate others about the benefits of pavement preservation in partnership with the Caltrans and industry. This would involve educational programs at the university as well as distant learning opportunities.
Enhance pavement preservation knowledge through research and training.
Advise and assist others to establish a pavement preservation program.
