Dr. Kenneth N. Derucher is Dean of the College of Engineering, Computer Science, and Construction Management at CSU, Chico, where he is also a Professor of Civil Engineering. Dr. Derucher received his degrees from Tri-State University with a major in Structures (B.S. 1971); University of North Dakota with a major in Soil Mechanics (M.S. 1973); and Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University with a major in Civil Engineering Materials (Concrete) and Structures (Ph.D. 1977).

His Ph.D. dissertation was on Micro and Macro Cracking of Concrete under Application of Compressive Stress Fields. His professional interests are in the areas of concrete, concrete making materials, concrete additives, and bridge and pier protective systems and devices. Dr. Derucher has been active in teaching, research, consulting, and service to the profession and community for over twenty-five years. Dr. Derucher is a successful researcher and fundraiser/friendraiser, having brought to the University externally funded research projects as well as equipment, software, and cash donations (exceeding $100,000,000).

Dr. Mike Ward received his degrees in Mechanical Engineering from University of California, Davis (B.S. 1973 and M.S. 1975) and Stanford University (Ph.D. 1983). He holds a California State Professional Engineering License. His professional interests are in the areas of applied mechanics, control systems and design.

Kristin Cooper Carter, MA, a graduate from CSU, Chico in Program Administration and Evaluation, has recently been hired to direct the newly proposed Concrete Industry Management Program for the College of Engineering, Computer Science and Construction Management at CSU, Chico. Cooper Carter is the Director of the College’s Office of Environmental Programs and has been a project director on several environmental projects on and off campus for over 10 years. These projects include, faculty research studies, feasibility studies and land management.
Carter oversees biological resource analysis and assists in developing mitigation strategies and recommendations for offsetting project effects on natural resources. She also prepares environmental documents and permits for all of the aforementioned projects. Her main area of focus is sustainability in the built environment. Over the last few years she has been awarded over $12 million in grant funding in support of her work. In 2004 she was given the “Outstanding Project Director” of the year award by the CSU, Chico Research Foundation.

Concrete Preservation Faculty & Internship Coordinator

Dr. Tanya Komas has a background in building design, historic preservation, and materials conservation and is pursuing research in concrete repair and preservation and the seismic considerations of concrete. Dr. Komas also has extensive experience in the development of computer graphic methodologies for use in the academic and practical applications of the building professions.

She has been the principal investigator and co-principal investigator for funded research projects and has participated as a speaker at many conferences and workshops. She has a Ph.D. in Architecture from Texas A&M University, a Certificate in Historic Preservation from Texas A&M University, an MS in Historic Preservation from Columbia University, New York, and a BS in Landscape Architecture from the University of California, Davis.

Dirk VanderloopTop of Page

Dr. Vanderloop has 17 years of professional technical and management experience in the design, fabrication, repair, modification, test, evaluation, and acquisition of products and services for production, maintenance, and research and development (R&D) activities.
His educational experience includes two years of teaching theory and workshop classes in Malaysia, a year of training factory workers in Indonesia, and nine years of delivering and developing lecture and laboratory courses at CSU, Chico.

His current research interests include the management of technology, intellectual property rights, and “best practices” in government-supported R&D projects. He earned a Doctor of Public Administration and an MS in Systems Management from the University of Southern California, a BA in Industrial Arts from Chico State. He holds a California Teaching Credential in Industrial & Technology Education and is a Certified Manufacturing Engineer.

Terry Battle has been with the College of Engineering, Computer Science, and Construction Management for over 24 years. She brings many years of extensive administrative management knowledge and expertise to the proposed Concrete Industry Management Program. She attended California State University, Long Beach, before moving to Chico in 1980.
