CE 20 Computer Applications in Engineering
Catalog Description:
Use of computer in a variety of applications from the fields of engineering. Topics include computer hardware, technical word processing, electronic spreadsheets, computer charting and drawing, computer programming, presentation software, and ethics. 4.0 hours of activity.
Prerequisites
PHYS 4A, MATH 7B

"Excel Programming", by Jinjer Simon, Hungry Minds, Inc., 2002
Course Objectives:
The purpose of this course is to provide students with the fundamental computer skills needed to succeed in the Civil Engineering degree program and in subsequent graduate studies and/or professional practice. The objectives of the course are as follows: - Development of student confidence in learning and using new computer software.
- Ability to utilize a word-processor to efficient create lab reports and documents with features including tables, styles, table of contents, equations, and graphics.
- Creation of computer presentations (i.e. slideshows) for presenting reports.
- Proficiency in a spreadsheet application including the ability to automate repetitive equations, solve simultaneous equations, develop macros for automating tasks, and data manipulation.
- Basic proficiency in a simple programming language to familiarize students with programming techniques to allow for future growth in programming skills.

- Provide a rigorous, well-balanced, comprehensive and contemporary curriculum stressing fundamentals common to many fields of civil engineering.
- Develop skills of written communication and critical thinking, which are important to a successful professional life.
Assessment - Daily homework assignments, collected weekly for numerical grading and written feedback.
- Occasional unannounced quizzes.
- Frequent in-class cooperative/interactive example assignments.
- One major programming project.
- One 2-hour comprehensive final exam.
